Connect leadership to learning
For Savannah Mercer, Bachelor of Science in Chemistry and Biology, 2024, leadership is about making connections between what you learn and how it can be part of solving real-world problems. Savannah is now a member of VIU's Molecular Modelling Research Group.
"I enjoy learning something new every day, while also challenging myself. I enjoy the hands-on learning aspect of research and applying knowledge to answer scientific questions. I've learned so much from participating in research and it's given me the opportunity to expand on skills that can be applied to other aspects of my life. Research can be extremely rewarding, knowing that the scientific community and beyond could benefit from it."

Lead in cutting-edge science
Jindar Sboto discovered his passion for chemistry in his freshman year at VIU. Collaborating with Dr. Chris Gill, Co-Director of VIU's Applied Environmental Research Laboratories, Jindar developed a rapid and cost-effective method to measure cannabinoids like THC and CBD using paper spray mass spectrometry. This approach furthers research on the effects of cannabinoids on fetal development.
"Chemistry is a fantastic science. The professors at VIU go above and beyond for their students in terms of help outside of class and the effort they put into their classes. My experience with the Chemistry department was fantastic, filled with great learning and amazing people and professors."
