What is RockVIU?

RockVIU: Welcome to Campus is Vancouver Island University's annual new student orientation hosted by the Office of Co-Curricular Engagement & Learning. RockVIU presents an opportunity for new students to explore the campuses, meet their faculty, and form new connections with their peers. This year's orientation is a full week of in-person onboarding activities supported by online sessions aimed to explore the theme of Connect, Engage, Discover.

  • Students pre-register to participate in an interactive guided Campus Excursion led by RockVIU Leaders! This is an opportunity to become acquainted with the campus layout and learn about VIU's facilities, as well as student life and culture on campus. These excursions will include stops at various Engagement Booths hosted by different VIU services to provide students with activities to get connected and have fun.

  • Students are invited to enjoy an in-person Fireside Chat experience in true Vancouver Island style. Get to know a RockVIU Peer Mentor, ask questions, and meet other student participants while enjoying the warmth of a firepit and campfire snacks! The Fireside Chat area will be available following both days of Campus Excursions.

Opening Ceremony: Welcome to Campus

Opening Ceremony

August 30, 2022, 6 - 7pm

  • RockVIU 2022 will commence with an opening ceremony featuring the VIU Elder giving a Traditional Coast Salish welcome. This will be followed by VIU’s President, Dr. Deborah Saucier giving all new students a welcoming address as students launch into their first year at VIU!

  • Peer-Supported Learning (PSL) offers free, regularly scheduled, informal study sessions led by a senior student who has been successful in this course. At its core, the PSL program helps students integrate what to learn with how to learn and it has been successfully implemented around the world as an effective study program.

  • Come attend Theyul’shenum Tseep from 9 – 9:45 am, a traditional welcome for new students and their families by our VIU Elders and hosted by Services for Aboriginal Students (SAS). Stop by Shq’apthut – A Gathering Place (Building 170) to meet SAS faculty and staff to learn about the great supports available to Aboriginal students on campus. A reminder to self-identify your ancestry on your application/student record. Students who have declared their ancestry are eligible for Aboriginal scholarships, awards, and bursaries.

  • Upper-level year students will be presenting their reflections on their first year as a student at VIU CCR Talks are short, TED-Talk-style presentations where students share 15 slides each for 25 seconds, resulting in a presentation that is 6 minutes and 25 seconds long.

  • This event provides new students with the opportunity to learn about services for students both on and off-campus. The goal is to connect new students to campus services, promote engagement and help to discover opportunities/services available to them. During these sessions students will speak directly to department representatives to learn more about how to create the best experience at VIU.
