Indigenous communities of Vancouver Island
There are three distinct cultural families in the regions surrounding Vancouver Island University: Coast Salish, Nuu-chah-nulth and Kwakwaka’wakw. Many of the Coast Salish communities are located between the southern tip of the Island and Qualicum Beach. The territory of the Nuu-chah-nulth is along the west coast of the Island. The Kwakwakaʼwakw traditional territory encompasses the Pacific Northwest Coast, spanning northern Vancouver Island, adjacent mainland British Columbia and the surrounding islands.
The three totem poles in front of Shq’apthut – A Gathering Place on VIU’s Nanaimo campus represent these three cultural families. Within these families are 50 Nations that represent a diverse range of cultures, traditions and teachings. All of them hold deep relationships with the land and waters around Vancouver Island and have much to teach us.
Shq’apthut
All are welcome at Shq’apthut, a space for connection, support and celebration. It’s a great place to grab a snack, study or visit with other students. You can stop in five days a week to chat with an Elder-in-Residence or to get support from an Indigenous Access Coordinator.
All VIU students are invited to many feasts, workshops and community events at Shq’apthut throughout the year.
Indigenous Access Coordinators
Indigenous Access Coordinators can connect you to essential on-campus and off-campus resources such as housing, funding and cultural supports. They also build a strong sense of community through events.

Elders-in-Residence
Elders-in-Residence are respected community Knowledge Keepers who offer guidance, care and support. They provide cultural and spiritual direction as well as emotional support. Their presence creates opportunities to build meaningful relationships and stay connected to community and cultural strength.

Housing
Indigenous students are guaranteed housing at VIU, and you can join an Indigenous living community at no extra cost. Apply by May 1 to qualify for guaranteed housing.
Paying for school
VIU entrance scholarships include options for Indigenous students. We also work with sponsoring First Nations to coordinate funding for post-secondary. Connect with Financial Aid & Awards for details.
