Create with words

Hilary Peach worked as a welder for 20 years. In 2022 she published a memoir entitled Thick Skin: Fields Notes from a Sister in the Brotherhood. She has also released poetry. Hilary credits her VIU welding instructor for teaching her that people in trades have a story to tell.

"My time in the program prepared me for my career, thanks largely to instructor Glen Nelson. He's an outstanding welder and teacher. There's a chapter about him in my book."

Create visual stories

Atticus Mercredi, a VIU Visual Art student, honours and tells the life story of his late mother, Glenda Faye Ledoux, through his exhibit Nikaway - My Mother in Cree at VIU's View Gallery.

"The story of my family's history is just one of many throughout this country. A lot of Indigenous people just don’t know their family members or are separated. I think if colonization never happened maybe I would have grown up with all my siblings and my mom."

Glenda Ledoux was a residential school survivor from Mistawasis Cree First Nation. Her story reflects the lasting impact of colonization on Indigenous people. Read more about Mercredi's tribute to his mother.
