We all have different identities, feel different things, and go through different emotions. To "Matter Here" means the VIU community understands, accepts, and cares about you as a person. In September 2021, many students shared feelings on the day of orientation by leaving a personal palm-print mark in different colours and a note on the white surface based on how they felt physically and mentally, what they identify as, and many more with the aid of a colour symbolism guideline.
