Welcome to Campus is a great opportunity to learn about your new school, meet your faculty, and make new friends. You won’t want to miss this full day of activities built on the theme, Connect, Engage, Discover!

RockVIU: Welcome to Campus Schedule
RockVIU 2018 - Overview
You will be paired with peers from your Faculty and will be notified closer to the date of RockVIU your allocated Group (A,B,C) and personalized schedule for the day. The general schedule can be seen above.
Theyul’shenum Tseep -Traditional Welcome
hosted by Services for Aboriginal Students
Time: 9:00-9:45 AM | The Gathering Place Building 170
A Traditional Welcome for New Students, a session specifically designed for Aboriginal Students (and their families). This session begins with an official Traditional Coast Salish Welcome, followed by a range of interactive presentations of academic, health, wellness and cultural services available for students that will certainly give you a “heads up” start to your studies. Please note: We request students and or parents to pre-register for this event via the RockVIU Registration 2018 form. If you have registered for this event, please arrive at the RockVIU 2018 Check In at 8:00am.
Official Welcome with VIU Elder, featuring Drum Café
Location: VIU Gym, Building 190
Welcoming all new students to VIU with an official welcome by VIU Elder. This will be followed by a welcome speech by the President Dr. Ralph Nilson and RockVIU will begin with the Drum Café and a short performance by Box of Beats.
DISCOVER: Pecha Kucha Showcase
Location: Malaspina Theatre, Building 310
Upper-level students representing their respective Faculty will deliver dynamic Pecha Kucha style presentations on the theme "My first year at VIU". Pecha Kucha is a simple and unique presentation format where speakers present 20 slides, each for 20 seconds, resulting in a 6 minute and 40 second presentation.
ENGAGE: Build your Story | Connect Fair
Location: Upper Cafeteria, Building 300
Build your story is an activity for students to engage and collaborate with other students.
Connect Fair will help you to learn more about over 30 services for students.
CONNECT: BBQ Lunch | Campus Connect
Location: Lower Cafeteria Parking Lot, Lot R
BBQ lunch for all students! Take some time to stop and have some lunch on us! This will be an opportunity for students to connect and make new friends.
Campus Connect will be a mini campus tour for the students to get familiar with their faculty location.
Time: 2:30-3:15 PM | Location: Specific to each Faculty
Block Parties welcome students to their respective program, provide the opportunity toask questions and connect with faculty and current students. All Block parties are open to all students RockVIU Carnival powered by Box of Beats and International Talent Showcase
Time: 3:30-5:30 PM | Location: The Hub, Building 330
VIU would like to invite all RockVIU participants to join in the launch of a new student engagement space, dubbed " The Hub".
The Hub is a new student space on campus that includes the The Think Tank, The Lounge, The Studio and The Patio that provide space for student engagement activities.
This event will feature carnival games including inflatables, dunk tanks and free give-aways It is powered by Brandon Martinez, “Box of Beats”, a musician from Los Angeles and will include an International talent showcase.
Join us at the RockVIU carnival and meet other students on campus and learn how you can get involved at VIU.
Time: 11:15-12:15 PM| Location: VIU Students Union Pub
This session will be an opportunity for parents to network and get to know the VIU Faculty/ Departments representatives and campus services.
**Parents will also be invited to attend the Theyul’shenum Tseep- Traditional Welcome and the Official Welcome with VIU Elder, featuring Drum Café.
Rock the Block: Faculty Block Parties
Most of our Faculties across campus are hosting a Block Party to welcome you to your program area ask questions and connect with faculty and current students. Block parties are open to all students, we recommend checking out your block party then visiting others!

What to expect
Welcome to Campus is open for new students in all programs at Cowichan Campus
Sign-in begins at 8:30 am in Learning Commons (next to the Welcome Centre)
Itinerary and swag bag for each student
Fun and personalized campus tour that will allow you to become more familiar with VIU, Cowichan Campus
Interactive and engaging coffee break with students in your program area and your future faculty
Help to set up your computer account and library account
Pay your tuition, purchase textbooks and supplies, buy snacks, or get yourself some brand-new VIU wear
Get your student ID card
Fabulous free lunch, music, and draw prizes!

What to expect
- Students attending the welcome event at the Powell River campus will have the opportunity to get their student card, meet Student Affairs staff, get a VIU computer account and access their student record
- Get familiar with campus and enjoy a free lunch and prizes!
